The Salsa King of New York is ready to leave his mark, not his heart, in San Francisco.
Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz — who has yet to practice his slick salsa moves in the end zone during Big Blue’s playoff run — hopes to change that statistic in the NFC championship tilt at Candlestick Park.
“I hope so. You go into every week hoping you get into the end zone,” Cruz said Monday night. “Hopefully this is my week, man. I’m more worried about the win. I feel good. I’m comfortable. I think the anxiety is starting to settle a little bit. I can just go out there and be comfortable.”
Cruz was touchdown-less in Green Bay, but he made up for it with plenty of key plays — including a recovery of an onside kick in the fourth quarter when the Packers had pulled within 10 points.
“We understood that they had a little bit of momentum, especially after scoring. It went right through one of our player’s legs. I was right there. I just jumped on it and recovered it,” said Cruz. He also had several key third-down receptions against Green Bay that he said “were almost equal to a touchdown, so I’ll take it.”
The fan favorite was at the midtown Puerto Rican restaurant, Sofrito, Monday night to unveil the commemorative Super Bowl XLVI artwork by pop artist Charles Fazzino. Cruz, who is part Puerto Rican, reiterated that his thigh injury was “good,” although he definitely is looking forward to Tuesday’s off day to rest his body more. He showed no visible limp at the restaurant.
Cruz said the offense will have to bring its “A game” to the Bay Area against one of the league’s best defenses. In Week 10, Niners beat the Giants 27-20, although Cruz had a chance to haul in a fourth-down pass in the final moments that he says would have resulted in a touchdown. San Francisco’s Justin Smith batted down the Eli Manning pass to seal the win.
“It was a good game. I was pretty open on that specific play. If the ball had gotten through, I think I would have came up with that football,” said Cruz, a new father to daughter Kennedy born Jan. 9. “Obviously we were one play away from winning that ball game. It’s exciting to play them again, get that team again. In these circumstances, it should be a pretty good ballgame.”
